[Documentary] Jupiter’s Dance (2006)

This is a must see documentary featuring Jupiter Bokonji and his group Okwess International but also other very talented artists from Kinshasa working their way through. I actually bought the DVD years back and it came with a music CD of all Okwess’ songs heard in the documentary. Jupiter Bokonji is one of the artists who bring Kasayi culture upfront, in his own way, and I must say his music is super good. I totally agree when he says Congolese people don’t know the well of talent present in Kongo. It’s so true. We’ve have only scratched the surface!!!

Virunga

Virunga is presently on Netflix. I watched it this weekend and it is quite compelling. It left me wondering all day… Why do people don’t leave us alone??? Congolese people don’t hurt anyone but people from all around the world keep coming and hurting us. Money drive people crazy. Obviously misery is a good companion for greediness and corruption… Thankfully, there are and will always be people with their heart in the right place…

I recently watched a very powerful and moving documentary.  It had all the makings of a great blockbuster, but it wasn’t at all a Hollywood film, and this was perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect of it.  As I was watching, a part of me reasoned that such extreme violence, corruption, and despair could only be fiction.  Yet, Virunga depicts the lives of real people – the rangers of Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Every day, these rangers risk their lives to protect Virunga, home to the critically endangered mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei), amongst many other unique species.  In a country left broken by civil war, with endless threat from poachers and militant rebel groups, this is no easy task.  In fact, as mentioned in the film, many of these rangers have lost their lives.  This documentary left me both stunned and emotionally devastated. …

Mapping Armed Groups in Eastern Congo – 4th Edition

ethuin's avatar

Regular readers may have noticed that this website features a mapping of armed groups in eastern Congo which is periodically updated and refined (three times a year). Today, the 4th edition of this complicated and always unfinished exercise goes online and adds to the yet existing mappings.

As stated repeatedly in the lengthy disclaimer necessary due to the political connotations and dangers of misinterpreting this work, it makes sense to also here underline the following explanations:

The mapping describes the yones of influence, not necessarily full control, for the indicated armed groups and fixed (official) positions for the national army. Changes in the subsequent maps reflect either changes on the ground or (for the time being) refinements relating to improved information.

This exercise does not entail any claim of full accuracy and merely represents an approximate assessment of the situation with uncertainty and potential errors always remaining.
