Niite nassib usiniite dai
Asije kukuona muhuni akapandisha mbogo
Na ukifika uagize chai
Savannah tequila uzipe kisogo
Kuhusu mavazi kimini haifai
Tupia pendeze ladha yake inoge

Even thou wanaponda eti we ni kicheche
Waambie ndo chaguo langu sasa wanicheke
Even thou wanaponda we ni kicheche
Waambie ndo chaguo langu sasa wanicheke

Minataka kesho twende nikupeleke nyumbani
Minataka kesho twende ukamuone mama
Minataka kesho twende nikupeleke nyumbani
Minataka kesho twende ukamuone mama

Na usilete swagger za nai nai
Ukanyoa kiduku kama moze liogo
Eti shopping twende thai
Wakati dada angu ana duka kidogo
Ukikuta nguna usikatae
We zuga unapenda hatakama wa muhogo
Kuhusu kabila wala silagai
Mama angu hana noma hatakama mgogo

Even thou wanaponda eti we ni kicheche
Waambie ndo chaguo langu sasa wanicheke
Even thou wanaponda we ni kicheche
Waambie ndo chaguo langu sasa wanicheke

”Douceur” by Mbilia Bel

Mbilia Bel is very well respected. I can honestly say she is considered as one of the living legend of congolese music, one of the Congolese Divas. This is a sweet song that I really like. When my friends hear it, despite they don’t get a word of it, they listen to it until the end… Enjoy!

”Sura Yako” by Sauti Sol

Great song that I listen to non-stop by the Kenyan group Sauti Sol, who won Best African Act at the 2014 MTV EMAs. This was last summer hit in Kenya with many vidz of people trying to do the lipala dance (find the link at the end of the post). This song will get you jumping on your feet. You can hear the “congolese guitar” in the background but the song style is totally Kenyan. I should make a post about Congolese guitar style… Anyways, back to the song. The lyrics are pretty nice too, for what I understand. Kenyan Kiswahili, or ‘Kiswahili bora’ as we call it in Congo, is a bit different, with more Arabic and more English into it. Maybe there are also some slang words or colloquial expressions that I don’t really get (I put a question mark where I’m not sure. Feel free to post comments for your translation). Basically, the guy explains to the girl he chose to marry all the reasons why he loves her and why she shouldn’t love anybody else but him. ‘Sura yako muzuri mama’ will be stuck in your head for a while after one listen. It means ‘Girl, you look fine’… All is said… Enjoy! 🙂

Où tu m’as répudié
When you threw me away
Ngela cyanza ne kukwata
J’ai tendu la main pour te retenir

Wewe nyi nyaya kwetu
Toi tu as dit de rentrer chez nous
You told me to go home

Jusqu’au petit matin
Until the early morning

From the bottom of my heart

Tu m’as donné une grosse croix à porter
You gave me a big cross to bear

[Lyrics Translation] “Kànkamana” by Tshala Muana

Here’s a smooth piece by Tshala Muana. In this song, the message is a little more profound than a simple love story. The woman tries to comfort her husband who has a hard time. Basically, she says “don’t give up, soon everything will be better”. The audio is not top quality so there are some words that we couldn’t clearly get and went with the closest meaning possible. As always, don’t hesitate to provide corrections or translation ideas. Hope you’ll enjoy this!

[Lyrics Translation] “Lekela Mwadi” by Tshala Muana

This song is probably my favorite song in this world. It is a mix of salsa and mutwashi, the traditional rhythm of Kasayi, Congo. As I explained in a previous post, this song is a good example of “lisanga” or dedications, ”shout outs”. All along the song, Tshala Muana lists several people’s names. I put those parts between parenthesis…

This transcript is here only thanks to my mum who spent some of her free time on this… If you use this translation, please mention this blog to encourage us translating even more songs… It will be appreciated!^^

N.B.: Apparently this song is known in Latin America as “Kabuya” by Africando. TOTALLY FALSE!!! Give back to the Queen what belongs to the Queen. Africando is a Senegalese salsa band who often invited Congolese artists on their albums such as Papa Wemba, Nyboma or Madilu System but, correct me if I’m wrong, as far as I know, they never invited Tshala Muana and I don’t think they speak Ciluba. However, ‘Lekela Mwadi’ was featured on Putumayo compilation entitled ‘Congo To Cuba’.

[Lyrics Translation] “Leja Bulelà” by Tshanda Sangwa

The lyrics follow. There is only one actual verse repeated several times and the chorus is only one line. What fills in are the dedications or mabanga. This is an extremely common phenomenon in Congolese music. They are not lyrics as per say but names that would be listed. They generally praise the dead, the hero, the cultural icon, the celebrity but even you , as a ”normal” person, can have your name recorded by a famous singer. In exchange of whatever present, or upon a simple request, the singer will praise your name in their next hit song… So don’t be confused… A good part of the lyrics here are made of dedications which I won’t translate. Some Congolese artists don’t put dedications in their songs. This phenomenon is really common but it also depends on the type of music…
The special effects are very basic but this video is also interesting for the traditional ornament and clothing it shows. These are typically Kasayan clothing. You can also try to get some move of the traditional Kasayan dance, Mutuashi!!! hehe This said, enjoy!

TRANSLATION

Verset 1

Oh ! Mon Dieu, où irais-je encore si ce n’est chez Toi ?

Oh ! Mon Dieu !
Montre Ta puissance
Au sein de Ton peuple
Que Ta lumière et Ta force
Vivifient tes enfants perdus (x2)

Que Dieu Notre Seigneur soit loué (x4)

Verset 3

L’arc-en-ciel, source d’eau vive qui vivifie
Oasis, source d’eau vive
Quand tu la bois, elle apaise ton âme
Protecteur des hommes courageux
Ceux qui lapèrent l’eau comme les chiens
Où irais-je encore mon Dieu
Que vers Toi, Dieu d’Israël.
