One of Africa’s biggest hitmakers, Tabu Ley Rochereau, a star with a honeyed voice who went on to become one of the continent’s most successful music impresarios, died Saturday. He never truly recovered from cardiovascular problems two years ago, and died at a hospital in Brussels after being admitted with an infection.

He was born Pascal-Emmanuel Sinamoyi Tabu in either 1937 or 1940 (sources differ) in a small village in Bandudu province in what was then still the Belgian Congo and is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. He became one of Africa’s most prominent musicians — dubbed “the voice of lightness” for his effortlessly sweet tone — and along the way was one of the pioneers of Congolese rumba, the dance music that managed to meld the sounds of a Cuban bandstand with…

policier

HAPPY 88TH #BORNDAY
Patrice Lumumba
(2 July 1925 – 17 January 1961) was a Congolese independence leader and the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo, after he helped win its independence from Belgium in June 1960. Only twelve weeks later, Lumumba’s government was deposed in a coup during the Congo Crisis. The main reason why he was ousted from power was his opposition to Belgian-backed secession of the mineral-rich Katanga province.

You have probably heard of them by now but do you know where this sub-culture’s roots come from?SAPEUR-3
This movement occured in the 1970’s in the Congo as a revolt towards the oppresive, strict regime of Mobutu Sese Seko which prescribed traditional clothing as the attire of no-choice.

There are strict rules of dress for Sapeurs: three colors are the maximum for an outfit and the status of style is increased by accessories, such as cigars, pipes, ties, glasses, and walking sticks.

DR Congo giant hydro dam work starts 2015

Bidding is still not over but Canada, China and South Korea are on the line to be part of the project. Polemic is growing among Congolese population though as this project is made by industrial corporations and seems to be mainly made for industrial plants (Katanga, South Africa, etc…). The Congolese Government doesn’t seem to be that much involved in this project. It looks like the Congolese population won’t see a kW of the electricity produced by this gigantic hydro-electric complex. I hope it is just false rumors because that would be one more thing that the Congolese people wouldn’t be enjoying. What good is there to have all the resources in the world if other countries just take it for almost free???

WORK on the world’s biggest hydroelectric dam will start in October 2015 in the Democratic Republic of Congo after talks between DR Congo and international officials.

Inga

Sunday’s meeting on the proposed Inga dam on the Congo river also involved multilateral lending institutions.

A statement said the “foundation stone will be laid in October 2015.”

“With a production of 40,000 megawatts, the Grand Inga project will eventually provide electricity to half the African continent,” it said.

This is less than half of the DR Congo’s total hydropower resources, which the World Bank estimates at 100,000 megawatts.

World Bank estimates suggest that if completed and running at full capacity, the complex could provide energy to up to 500 million African households.

The first phase of the project, Inga 3 Basse Chute, will have a capacity of 4800 megawatts.

The Paris meeting follows a deal signed on May 7 between South Africa and…
